Daily Storage Requirements for Clothing Fabrics

Jun 06, 2026 Leave a message

Proper storage is essential for maintaining fabric quality and extending its lifespan. Different fabrics may require different care measures due to their characteristics.

Cotton and Linen Fabrics

While cotton and linen fabrics are generally not afraid of direct sunlight, prolonged exposure to strong sunlight can reduce their durability when worn, and may cause fading or yellowing. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid direct sunlight and ideally dry the fabric inside out. These fabrics should also be kept away from acidic substances to prevent corrosion and damage. Fleece fabrics should be handled with care, avoiding heavy pressure and friction to prevent pilling and uneven coloring. After washing, drying, and ironing, cotton and linen garments should be neatly folded and stored according to color depth. Furthermore, because these fabrics are highly absorbent, they should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated place to prevent mildew caused by an unclean wardrobe.

Wool Fabrics
Wool fabrics are best dried in the shade, avoiding prolonged exposure to sunlight to prevent fading and loss of color, elasticity, and strength. For thicker, darker fabrics, the drying time can be slightly longer; while for thinner, lighter-colored fabrics, it should be shorter. When wearing wool fabrics, keep them away from sharp, rough objects and strong alkaline substances to prevent pilling or corrosion. Pay special attention to minimizing friction when wearing coarse wool fabrics to prevent shedding. Before storing, ensure the fabric has been washed, ironed, and thoroughly dried, then hang it in a wardrobe with mothballs to prevent insect damage. Additionally, open the wardrobe periodically during storage to maintain ventilation.

Silk Fabrics: Prolonged exposure to sunlight will cause silk fabrics to fade, lose strength, and affect their feel and luster. Therefore, when wearing silk garments, avoid contact with rough or sharp objects to prevent snagging. Especially for tussah silk garments, avoid getting them wet, as water stains are difficult to remove. When storing silk garments, thoroughly wash, dry, and iron them, then fold them neatly. It is not advisable to hang these garments in the closet for extended periods, as the fabric may stretch due to draping. Laying them flat is the best storage method.

Synthetic Fiber Fabrics: After prolonged exposure to sunlight, synthetic fiber fabrics will age, harden, and lose strength, and may even discolor or fade. Therefore, when storing garments made of this type of fabric, ensure they are thoroughly washed, dried, and ironed before neatly folding them. Furthermore, since synthetic fiber fabrics are generally not affected by insects or mildew, there is no need to place mothballs during storage.
